After an exhausting struggle Obama succeeded to manage it: with 219 ayes and 212 nays, the House of Representatives approved his Health Reform Bill.
The President of the United States achieved the goal in which anyone else had failed, erasing the gap in the quality of medical cures offered to the people that distinguished the USA from the rest of wealthy nations. To obtain the majority in the House, Obama had to work really hard. The fact that none of the Republicans would have voted for his Bill was obvious as it was obvious that some of the Democratics, worried about not being re-elected in November, would have voted against it. If the President had not intervened himself, after having postponed his journey to Indonesia, trying to find a mediation with the right-to-lifers, the nays would have won.
The group, under the leadership of the representative Bart Stupak, decided to side with the Bill only after that Obama signed an executive order that stresses the prohibition on the use of federal funds to provide abortions. In other words, the majority has been gained thanks to the assurance the President gave to this group of dissidents. Therefore, a mutilated victory. But, in spite of this, an epochal achievement.
